This is the real predecessor - THE Pre-Daytona - the Rolex reference 6238. It's the last overhaul of the sporty Rolex chronograph before the introduction of the Cosmograph/Daytona. Introduced in 1962 it had a solid production run of about 8 years.The blue dial offers sharp contrast against the white metal finish, displaying the time with long-lasting Chromalight in white gold surrounds. This design is truly remarkable, from the high-quality gold finish to the legibility of the hour markers and hands.Each had three chronograph registers, and each also featured a big date – wheels for day and month – and a central hand pointing to a date of the month chapter ring at the edge of the dial. Lug style and size were the main differences between the various references.
The Rolex chronograph ref. 6238 was produced from the early 1960’s to 1967. It has a more modern look than the previous chronographs issued by the brand, but still carries the inner tachymetric scale and outside smooth bezel that are typical of the 1950’s.
This 50+ year old watch is in fantastic condition, with a beautiful black dial free of any flaws or scratches. The case is also in wonderful condition, a true rarity among Rolex watches of this age. The 1.10 million serial number suggests the watch was produced around 1964/65.Full steel, riveted Oyster bracelet, ultra rare dial with pale blue patina, "arrow head" indexes, chronograph, three subdials, minute division, pump pushers, hand wound movement. Dealer Antoine RauisThe dial signature features only 2 short lines, "Rolex" up top and "Chronograph" below. The chronograph function is clearly the star here and there is a tachymeter track as well, though it's smaller than on previous models and right at the dial's edge.
